California underground mining in historical context

California’s underground mining record is inseparable from the Gold Rush era and the later industrialization of hard-rock mining in the Sierra Nevada foothills. After surface placers were exhausted, companies drove shafts and adits into quartz veins of the Mother Lode and adjacent belts, leaving a dense legacy of documented underground workings that USGS mineral-resource inventories still catalogue today.

Beyond gold, California’s underground inventory includes mercury districts of the Coast Ranges (notably New Almaden and related areas), copper-zinc belts of the West and East Shasta districts, and desert hard-rock camps of the Mojave and Basin and Range margin.
